Though pretty much every beach is kiteable on the Sunshine Coast in the right wind conditions, there are four main kite beaches as well as some great spots just north and just south. It is possible to kite in the winter but the most consistent winds come in the summer months (November-April) when the sea breeze kicks in.

Noosa River Mouth

Noosa river mouth located on the Northern tip of the Sunshine Coast and is arguably the best spot on the coast. It is a great spot for flat water as well as waves as you come out of the mouth.

Noosa kiting works on a NE/E on an out-going tide. The summer months are the best time of year as the sea breeze kicks in almost everyday with winds from the N/NE.

Cotton Tree- Maroochy River Mouth

Cotton Tree, about 30 mins south of Noosa, is a great spot located in the heart of the Sunny Coast. Kiting here works on NE, E or SE (you can go out front the Maroochydore beach on a direct southerly but not in the river). Cotton Tree offers a little bit of everything, flat water, as well as beginner and advanced waves.

Good spot for beginners.

Check out Cotton Tree Backpackers for awesome accommodation for kiters.

Happy Valley- Caloundra

Happy Valley located in Caloundra, just south of Maroochydore, is great for flat water (partially protected by the tip of Bribie Island) as well as waves as you leave the mouth. Be careful on an outgoing tide as the tide rips here and you can easily lose a board or have a hard time relaunching if your kite crashes in the water. The quick tide makes Happy Valley kiteable in light winds.

Happy Valley is ideal for S/SE, E winds.

Not great for beginners.

Golden Beach- Caloundra Passage

Right around the corner from Happy Valley, is Golden Beach. Golden Beach is flat water as it is fully protected by the northern tip of Bribie Island and great on a S/SE. Not an easy launching area at high tide, but at low tide you can walk out and launch from the sand bar.  Tide rushes quick here on an outgoing tide.

Good for beginners on a low tide as it’s shallow enough to walk out.

Just North and just South of the Sunshine Coast also offer some great kite spots.

Double Island Point

Just North of Noosa is Double Island Point/Rainbow Beach, only accessible by four wheel drive. D.I. works on a N/NE wind direction and offers butter flat water as well as waves.

Sandgate is located between the Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. This location is best when the tide goes out when there is over a km of beach to set up. It is ideal for beginners as it is shallow (about waist deep) and tons of space to keep away from other kiters.

Sandgate works on a NE, E or SE wind direction.

Wear a wetsuit even in the summer months as there are jelly fish everywhere!!

Bongaree- Bribie Island

Bongaree located on the southern tip of Bribie Island is the place to be when the wind is blowing westerly. Bongaree offers small waves/chop plus a small flat water area when the tide is out.
